Each stone heart has Washington engraved on one side and Island engraved on the other. Carved from Kisii stone in Kenya by fair trade artisans, Kisii is the only region in the world with white soapstone. Each heart is carved in a multi-step process beginning with using Machetes, then a chisel, and finally is rubbed smooth underwater using sand. Because soapstone is porous it absorbs dye well, so each heart is dyed blue, and then the words are etched back into the original color. These are palm sized - larger than the Rock Island hearts and weigh in at nearly a pound. A rock solid memory from the island.
